Why Luna Lovegood was a True Ravenclaw

Luna Lovegood is a beneficiary of the fan’s and audience’s undiluted love and admiration. However, did the Sorting Hat place her in the right house? What house is Luna Lovegood in? Below is the reason behind our conclusion that she belongs to Ravenclaw.

She is Astute

Ravenclaws are perceptive, and Luna noticed things that other students did not during her time at Hogwarts.

There was that time she described Ron in a single sentence: ‘He says very funny things sometimes, doesn’t he?’ Luna said as they walked down the corridor together. ‘But he can be cruel at times.’

That was something I noticed last year.’ She also saw right through Polyjuice Potion when Harry used it to pretend to be Ron’s cousin, Barny Weasley.

Her perception, when combined with her wisdom, could go even deeper at times. Who else sobbed when she realized Harry needed a helping hand after the drama of the Battle of Hogwarts?

‘Harry found himself sitting on a bench beside Luna. ‘I’d want some peace and quiet, if it were me,’ she said. ‘I’d love some,’ he replied. ‘I’ll distract them all,’ she said. ‘Use your Cloak.’ And before he could say a word she had cried, ‘Oooh, look, a Blibbering Humdinger!’ and pointed out of the window.’

She is a Wise Woman

Luna may be eccentric – remember those radish earrings? – But that doesn’t mean she’s lacking in wisdom; quite the contrary. We remember her talking to Harry about grief and loss after Sirius was killed at the Ministry of Magic, in particular.

She told Harry a personal story about her mother’s death at a time when he needed to hear it, and she reminded him that the people we love never truly leave us:

‘Yes, it was rather horrible,’ said Luna conversationally. ‘I still feel very sad about it sometimes. But I’ve still got Dad. And anyway, it’s not as though I’ll never see Mum again, is it?’ ‘Er – isn’t it?’ said Harry uncertainly. She shook her head in disbelief. ‘Oh, come on. You heard them, just behind the veil, didn’t you?’ ‘You mean …’ ‘In that room with the archway. They were just lurking out of sight, that’s all. You heard them.’

But it’s not just emotions about which she has wise words; she was always prepared when it came to her habit of sleepwalking:

‘I’ve never been to this part of the castle. At least not while awake. I sleep walk, you see. That’s why I wear shoes to bed.’

She is Intelligent

Intelligence can manifest itself in a variety of ways, and we believe Luna has it in cauldrons. Let us not forget that it was Luna who assisted Harry in locating the lost Ravenclaw diadem; an essential part of the journey to defeat Lord Voldemort.

She then proceeded to answer the Ravenclaw door knocker’s riddle about whether the phoenix or the flame came first under extreme pressure.

We’d rather have her than us! Luna’s taste in magic may have been rather unique, but it must have taken some seriously impressive spell work to make her Gryffindor lion hat roar so realistically.

Her theories about Crumped-Horned Snorkacks or Nargles may not have been supported by much evidence, but she argued passionately for her point of view. She wasn’t even afraid to tell Hermione she was mistaken!

She is Exceptionally Creative

To gain access to each House’s common room, something different was required; for example, Gryffindor requires an ever-changing password.

In addition, Ravenclaw students must solve a difficult riddle to gain access to their common room. While Ravenclaw students are often perceived as book-smart, they also have creative minds that allow them to see beyond reason.

Luna led Harry to the Ravenclaw tower in search of the diadem, where she quickly solved a phoenix-related riddle.

Her talent, on the other hand, left Harry perplexed and in awe. It demonstrated how calm and creative she could be under pressure, as a looming war demanded that they act quickly.

She, Like Her House Founder, Has a Sad Past

One of the reasons there is a debate about Luna’s house is that she would have made an excellent Hufflepuff. Luna’s loyalty and kindness, both of which are essential Hufflepuff characteristics, knew no bounds.

Luna insisted on coming to the Ministry to assist her fellow DA members – riding the Thestrals was her idea. And Luna was one of only two DA members who answered the call of the charmed Galleons the night Malfoy let the Death Eaters into Hogwarts.

There’s no denying these characteristics exist, but we’d argue that the sadness in Luna’s past contributes to her empathy. And she shares this tragic backstory with the Ravenclaw house’s founder, Rowena Ravenclaw.

Luna’s mother died unexpectedly when she was nine years old when one of her spell experiments went horribly wrong. While Rowena’s daughter stole her diadem, she was murdered by a man the Bloody Baron who, instead of bringing Helena back as Rowena had hoped, killed her.

Perhaps their shared tragedies meant Luna had a special affinity for the Ravenclaw house. Though we’ll never truly understand the Sorting Hat’s decisions.

She Blends in with the Other Eccentric Ravenclaws

Wouldn’t it be fun to hear fellow Ravenclaws Luna and Professor Trelawney sipping tea together? Not to mention Moaning Myrtle, who was also in Ravenclaw!

Remember when she showed up in the Prefects’ bathroom and just stood there casually watching Cedric and Harry bathe? Thinking outside the box and being eccentric go hand in hand, though not all Ravenclaws wore their eccentricity as well as Luna did.

Gilderoy Lockhart’s luscious locks and purple clothes couldn’t hide the fact that he was stealing memories beneath it all. Gilderoy, that’s not cool. That’s not cool.

That’s all there is to it! Any Hogwarts house would be lucky to have Luna Lovegood among its ranks, but with apologies to Gryffindor, Slytherin, and Hufflepuff, we think the Sorting Hat got it right with Ravenclaw!
